I am a trained graphic designer and worked in that field for 10 years. I like to create more sculptural pieces that came together from a pattern in nature or simply just fooling around with stones and metal. I have worked with many mediums over the years and was never really completely fulfilled with any of them. The moment I lit a torch for the first time and melted my first piece of silver, I was hooked! Starting my shop was an easy decision. I knew that I wanted to try something different and start my own business and opening up an online shop seemed to make sense in an age that is so virtual. <br /><br /><strong>What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?</strong><br />Most online shops have Facebook fan pages where they announce new item listings, special deals and even giveaways! I use my Corilu Designs <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Corilu-Designs/175281702485408">Facebook</a> page for just that. I let my customers and fans know of new listings and special deals happening in my shop. I also offer special discount deals to my Facebook fans only! Surf around and find your favorite shops. (<em>This may take a while since there are so many wonderfully talented artists and shops selling fantastic items online</em>) and become a fan of their Facebook page.<br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Just like your home, keep the major pieces simple, classic and timeless. Use your accessories to stay current and fresh. The <a href="http://www.bellissimojewelry.com/">Bellissimo Jewelry</a> collection is full of well-priced items made with quality materials: semiprecious stones, sterling silver, fine silver, gold filled and some silver-plated items. I am a native Texan, and I left the corporate world behind 15 years ago to pursue my true passion -- creating all things beautiful! That is when I not only got into the jewelry business but also the interior design business. I have had these two business up and running ever since.<br /><br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />Both in my interior design business and in my jewelry line, I try to create items that everyone can afford and would be proud of. Something does not have to cost a lot of money to have excellent quality and look GREAT! I like to say I create for <em>everyday life</em>. Having two active boys myself and a hubby, I definitely have that everyday life. You don't want to spend a bundle on a sofa and let you kids sit on it and eat, nor do you want to spend a ton on a piece of jewelry and then regret it because it is too expensive to wear for "<em>everyday life</em>." None of my designs are created specifically for any occasion. Each one is created as a sentiment you would see or read and think, "<em>Oh, that is so Susan right now</em>," hence the name, Meant for a Moment. It is most important to me to be unique. All of my designs are hand-drawn or painted by me. My Etsy shop features all of my uniquely illustrated designs, recognized for their whimsical nature and loving sentiments. In my shop, you can purchase custom illustrations, M4aM stationery and illustrated prints. <br /> <br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />I was working a really tedious 9-5 job as a graphic designer, and I was yearning for more creativity in my life. Sitting inside the walls of my cubicle was cramping my style, and I didn't feel like I had that <em>glow</em> any more. Illustrating always gave me a glow of confidence, and I had lost it in the mix of my 9-5 job. So I made a deal with myself, 'to be remarkable.' And that's how it all began. On my lunch breaks, I would sketch greeting card designs and write clever, quirky little sentiments all over anything I could find. My mind became consumed with the creations of this card line, "Meant For A Moment." Everything I saw turned into a future card. Friends would catch me saying, "<em>Oh, that would be a great greeting card!</em>" all the time. It was really a fun time. As word spread about my illustrative pursuit, I began to receive inquires about custom illustrations. Soon, I had enough inertia, energy and courage to follow my dream. I left my 9-5 job and created my company, "Meant for a Moment Designs." I opened my Etsy store a few months after I had all my ducks in a row, and it has been a glowing adventure ever since. <br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />I have been hooked on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com">Pinterest</a>, and I have found some amazing hair tutorials that are out of this world. I really love the <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/38329863/hold-your-hand-illustrated-print">Hold Your Hand</a> print that reads "<span style="font-style:italic;">It's not going to be easy she said, but if you promise to never let go of my hand I think I could hold onto yours forever</span>" I was falling madly in love when I created this print, and it is actually a drawing of my fiance, Dave, and I -- we're in the midst of planning our wedding for July. It was a super amazing time for me to feel so in love with someone so fast. I actually gave him the print for our first Christmas together, and it is hanging in our bedroom now.

I am married to a military man and have 3 young sons, so to say my life can get hectic is an understatement! It is my therapy, my creative outlet, and my way of sharing a piece of myself with the world. <br /><br />In my studio, I surround myself with beautiful gemstones, gold, and silver to create elegant, sophisticated jewelry. I love the versatility of simple designs that can be worn every day or for a special occasion. It is my hope that each piece will be worn for years to come.<br /> <br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />It all began at a small table in my blue dining room. I spent hours wire wrapping beautiful gemstones into jewelry to share with friends and family. What began as a hobby quickly bloomed into full-fledged passion. All of this creative energy actually came as a surprise to me; I have always been more of a jock than an artist. I spent my childhood playing sports and went on to study, then practice, physical therapy. But once the artist flame was lit, there was no extinguishing it. Pretty quickly, I realized I couldn't possibly wear everything I was creating, so I decided to open my Etsy shop.<br /><br /><strong>What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?</strong><br />Since I don't have much time to scope out all the great deals online, I sign up for the e-mails from my favorite shops. That way, all the deals arrive right in my inbox every day!<br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />Oh, accessories, of course! Keep the clothing basic and timeless so it lasts for several years, and use accessories to freshen your look. Currently, I am on a scarf kick. But I think my current favorite are the <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/93091676/citrine-earrings-14k-gold-filled-wire">citrine earrings</a>. I love the simplicity of the design and that they can be worn as an everyday earring or for a special occasion. And the fact they are very sparkly doesn't hurt either!

Unfortunately, I don't live at the beach or in the mountains, but kind of in the middle of both. I live with my husband Jeff and our three silly little boys. During the day I stay at home with my boys and work on my business. At night, I teach English as a Second Language to adults. I love all of my jobs (<em>mommy, artist, & teacher</em>), and they keep me very busy!<br /> <br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />I have always loved crafts. As a little girl, I loved to do anything "crafty." As an adult, I've tried to refine my skills. Although my passion is <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/juliethefish">JulieTheFish Designs</a> and the pieces I create for my customers, I still love to dabble in almost any craft. (<em>Although I'm horrible at drawing!</em>). In 2008, I was teaching myself hand-stamping and decided to open an Etsy shop. I thought it was a great way to keep my creative side alive while staying home with my sons. Little did I know that in a few years' time, it would become a full-time business! <br /> <br /><strong>What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?</strong><br />There are amazing coupon deals online now! Though I mainly focus on precious/semiprecious gemstones, I also incorporate some Swarovski Crystal and glass from time to time as well as a few unique or vintage pieces. Most of my designs are simple, clean and versatile -- making them great for everyday wear. I love what I do, and I adore each and every customer that passes through my shop.<br /><br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />I have been a DIY-er my entire life, and that included making my own jewelry or modifying jewelry that I received growing up. What inspired me to start my own shop first was the encouragement of others. Honest support from others is a powerful tool...especially for those of us who are shy about putting our work out there. My kids really are what brought me out of the woodwork, though. Becoming a mother has made me much more brave. <br /><br /><strong>What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?</strong><br />This is a hard question as for me... the specific product I’m looking for changes up my shopping style. For products from larger companies that are able to mass produce, I have to confess I hit ebay a lot. I’m a mom who doesn’t really have disposable income, but one thing I can’t skimp on is skincare. <a href="http://buy.dermalogica.com/Default.aspx?gclid=CL-HiYPpza4CFcNrKgodpk3VAw">Dermalogica</a> is one of the only lines that really works for my skin, and I have found the best prices on ebay (<em>shipping included</em>). I do spend time comparing, though, and do a good 30 minutes of searching before I buy. You can find great pieces there, no matter your age, for a good price. You just have to be willing to spend some time there and try on lots of stuff. As for jewelry, if you like the look of real gemstones and handmade, look for brass pieces. Brass is less expensive than sterling silver or gold filled, so you can find some really great pieces for less and still enjoy the quality of handmade. Lastly, I think taking good care of yourself is where style starts. Keep a good skin- and hair-care regimen. There are lots of great ideas online to keep both looking great for a low cost. For example, I am a HUGE fan of lemon juice and baking soda for an exfoliator. It works great, and I have very picky skin.<br /><br /><strong>What is your favorite item in your shop and why?</strong><br />This is such a hard question too. My favorite tends to shift a lot, but right now I would choose any item made with rose gold, like the <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/89693545/garnet-necklace-in-rose-gold-filled">garnet necklace</a>, above. It’s my sister’s fault! :)

One of my dearest friends was my biggest motivator. I talked with my hubby, and he was all for it. Then in September, I had a luxury photographer email me and ask if I could create some boutonnieres based on some inspiration images she had for a stylized shoot. One thing led to another, and she was asking me to make more than just the boutonnieres and offering to sell my bridal goods in her studio. That launched Luxe Boulevard Bridal in full swing.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">What's your best piece of advice for people looking for great online shopping deals?</span><br />Subscribe to you favorites! If you find a vendor you love and value their product, subscribe to them via email. Usually, when they have a sale, they will email their customers and you get first notice. So often I find an outdated something at the thrift store and update it to my liking. Learn to sew. Believe me, you can do it. It just takes practice, like anything else that is new to you. You can spend $40 on a dress at the department store, or $10 on materials and do it yourself. <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/">Burdastyle</a> has tons of free patterns. Tutorials are everywhere online. I often post my own tutorials, sharing the things that I make, because I believe every woman should be able to look and feel her best without straining her bank account. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">What is your favorite item in your shop and why?</span><br />My <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/LuxeBoulevard?section_id=10670370">bouquets</a> are most definitely my favorite items. They are the hardest and most time consuming to make, but their end result always leaves me in awe more than any others. I'm named after my mom and grandmother, who are both amazing in front of a sewing machine and even better in front of a stove. I luckily inherited some of their talent in the sewing arena...not so much in the kitchen, unfortunately. My grandmother (<em>we call her Mamama</em>) always made the most delicious cookies when we visited growing up. Thin, crispy, buttery goodness -- named Oatmeal Lace. Naming the company after those cookies is my little shout-out to her and all she's accomplished in her lifetime. I mean, seriously, how many 94-year-olds do you know who still live alone, drive and play golf?? Oatmeal Lace was started with weddings in mind, and its primary focus has been on brides-to-be and their bridal parties. It's been successful in that arena, which has allowed me to branch out and start making bags for other occasions and dabble in baby products. So much fun!<br /><br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />It was almost a fluke, actually. While planning my wedding, I rediscovered my creative side -- it had been dormant for quite some time. Anyways, I was having a lot of trouble deciding what to gift my bridesmaids that would be something they would want to use after the wedding, be customized to their individual taste and also not kill the budget that I was working so hard to stay within. I knew how to sew, thanks to my mom and Mamama, and I love bags, as did my bridesmaids, so decided that I was going to make them custom clutches (<em>a very lofty goal at the time</em>). I also do this for purchases I make in-store, since many coupons you can print out and take with you...<br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />If you consider t-shirts, jeans and flip flops "chic", then I'm your gal. :) Honestly, what I find the easiest and most effective way to liven up any outfit (<em>especially the t-shirts I'm always wearing</em>) is buying a fun scarf or a great pair of earrings. I'm a huge fan of Forever 21, Target, Marshalls & TJMaxx to source fun & inexpensive jewelry/accessories. I'm partial to dangly earrings since I throw my hair back in a ponytail 95% of the time, and they are guaranteed to automatically make me feel more put together and stylish when I wear them. Plus, Target has the best t-shirts for cheap -- and in a plethora of colors. I think I have one of each (<em>and about 5 in white</em>). I've also found that Marshalls & TJMaxx are a gold mine for fun infinity scarves that don't break the bank. They always add a little pizazz to any outfit you put together and work even in warmer climates like Tampa, where I am. I studied illustration at Rhode Island School of Design, and after I graduated, I started working as a Marketing Coordinator. Over the course of the five years since I graduated, I was working like crazy, I planned a wedding and got married, I bought a house and was trying to make it a home; sadly, my art was slipping farther away. And then I went to Paris on my honeymoon, and I came back with inspiration literally bursting out of my head and onto paper. I was creating illustration after illustration and developed the characters, Coco and Louie. From these two characters, I began creating products featuring them and other illustrations that made me smile. So many stores have deals all the time to try to bring customers in. And, as I said above, I love to shop stores like Target, ModCloth and ASOS for the really trendy pieces and then mix them with higher-end classics. I never know what someone will be requesting, and I know it will always be out-of-the-box, original and so personal for my client. I’ve worked on things like illustrations of pets for tote bags, wedding thank-you notes, shower invitations, blog headers and pictures of loved ones. Each vintage piece of jewelry has a story behind it, and I love being able to mix it with new pieces to create a whole new story. The name pairs a Spanish exclamation with the word <em>revival</em>, which describes using a vintage piece in my jewelry and essentially giving it a new life. I create and design the entire line myself. I'm constantly learning new techniques so I can always add unique pieces. Right now, I'm making a lot of items using precious metal clay. This special clay fires in a kiln to make fine silver. I love this medium because there's really no end to what I can do with it. I have also been doing a lot of sawing of sheet metal and personalized hand-stamping. I enjoy being able to make a truly personal and special item for someone.<br /><br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong> <br />Years ago, my mom had all this great vintage jewelry around her house, just sitting there. Some pieces were broken or missing stones. I made these pieces into jewelry for myself. I had so much fun doing it; I'd discovered a whole new hobby. I spent a lot of time learning new ways to make and repair jewelry. After I perfected my techniques, I decided to venture out and try to sell it. I made too much to keep it all! My friend had told me about this site called Etsy, and as soon as I saw it I knew it was the right place for me. I offer discounts to my customers through these sites rather than announcing it on my Etsy page. It's always a great idea to subscribe to e-mail lists as well. I get e-mails from companies like One King's Lane, Ideeli and MyHabit daily. It just takes a few seconds to see if they have anything you want and you don't miss out on unexpected sales. But, I always say if it's the perfect gift, it's worth full price!<br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />I'm not much into brands, and I hate to wear something everyone else is wearing. I find a lot of great things at thrift stores and on Etsy. I used to have an aversion to thrift stores until I found the right ones to go to! I'll usually find a really cool piece and mix it in with some newer items that are already in my closet. I really think accessorizing is the key! That part always was in the plan. However, the passion to end human trafficking came later. I was living overseas at the time and got to spend a month in Thailand working with a really incredible anti-trafficking organization and spent time meeting women who’d been rescued and those also trapped in the commercial sex trade (which feeds into human trafficking) and felt burdened and compelled to do something. Radiant is a combination of two passions of mine, but even deeper than that, I really believe there is power when women get together and talk. I think makeup really allows for that, I get to sit down with women and hear their stories and share a small piece of my heart. I think we underestimate that, so that also served as an inspiration, harnessing that power, if you will. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">What is one fact or statistic about human trafficking that people would be surprised to learn?</span><br />I think people are most surprised to learn that it happens right here in the United States. We tend to think of this as a third-world country and predominantly a problem only overseas. The U.S. government estimates that over 100,000 children are trapped in the sex trade in the U.S. each year, and 18,000 foreign men, women and children are trafficked into the U.S. annually. The global reach of this injustice is staggering; 161 countries worldwide have been identified as affected by human trafficking. Are you pleased with the results?</span><br />Thus far, most of our efforts have been awareness of human trafficking and financial contributions. I have been very pleased with the results, and it’s been exciting to watch our numbers grow, specifically in the money we get to give to our partner organization each month. I love knowing that our customers are giving back with each product they purchase. I also really love getting to speak with women one-on-one about human trafficking and feel we’re making an impact that way. While I’m pleased with our results, we continue to want to improve and find other unique ways to help. We’ve got a really amazing, hands-on event coming up in the next several months that I believe others will really love and will be moved by. I’m excited to see how that impacts others as well. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">What can people do to make a difference?</span><br />Get educated and get involved! There are so many amazing organizations that are working to end this injustice. I’ve got quite a few listed on the <a href="http://radiantcosmetics.org/human-trafficking">Human Trafficking</a> section of my Web site. Learning more about human trafficking is the first step. But perhaps the most crucial step is doing something about it. There are tons of ways you can volunteer your time and/or donate money to the cause. <br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Where do you see the company in 5 years?</span><br />I see Radiant as a driving force behind ending human trafficking. I see our customers rallying behind what we stand for and getting involved. I definitely see Radiant expanding it’s reach to overseas with organizations in Thailand and India and various other places to help women.

We bring our designs to women via appointments or in-home trunk shows, but with a modern and fresh approach. By that, I mean we simply offer the best of boutique shopping (<em>cute clothes, reasonable price points, limited-edition designs, personal service</em>) without the trappings that most people have come to associate with home trunk shows. It's very simple...just shopping!<br /><br /><strong>What inspired you to start the shop?</strong><br />Well, I started the business in college with my boyfriend (<em>Dik-San, now my husband</em>) 25 years ago. I was working 3 jobs trying to pay my way through college; I was impatient and extremely stubborn, and I just couldn't see waiting to get started. I began selling my designs at some local boutiques, then Dik-San took my first sample line on the road and came back with boutique orders. We both dropped out of school when we had some initial success designing and selling to major department stores and catalogs. We developed a very nice wholesale business for many years, and started the home trunk shows about 10 years ago, completely by accident...they started as a way for us to sell off all our cancelled orders in the aftermath of 9/11. It took us quite a few years to develop the business properly, but we absolutely love it now.<br /><br /><strong>In this recession economy, what are some ways people can still look chic for less?</strong><br />I believe you can look fabulous without spending a ton of money. First, visit your own closet often. I do this all the time! Add newness by only purchasing a few items that you absolutely love, and make sure those pieces are 'mileage' pieces...ones that you will not only wear often, but are pieces that others SEE you in...it's important that your coat or layering sweaters look great and that you feel wonderful in them.
