Then, on Christmas, they invited family over to share in the exciting discovery with them. It was...<em>a boy</em>! Little Cole (<em>isn't that a sweet name?</em>) was born just a few weeks ago, and it got me thinking about how I don't think I'd be able to wait nine months to find out. The suspense would kill me, as if I were an anxious child waiting open that huge present on Christmas morning. <br /><br />And speaking of boys and girls, would you rather have one more than the other? Growing up, I always wondered if my father was sad that he didn't have any sons to throw the football around with or take on long weekend camping trips. His answer? Would You Rather: Have a large wedding or a small, intimate one?

I can count on one hand the number of weddings I've been to; I'm sure there are a couple I'm forgetting, but the number of weddings I can remember attending is under five. My oldest cousin got married when I was 16, and since she and her fiance (<em>my cousin-in-law?</em>) both have a large family, it was one of those big affairs, complete with a reception in a sprawling dining room.<br /><br />A few years later, I attended another cousin's wedding. This one, a quaint affair set against the backdrop of summer in upstate New York, was decidedly smaller, made up close friends and family. And when one of my oldest and dearest friends got married, she and her husband decided to forgo a traditional wedding altogether. Instead, they opted for a short ceremony at the courthouse with a few family members, and then invited friends and family to a backyard reception on a warm July day.<br /><div align="center"> </div><a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6685518759_e67208c166_o.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6685518759_e67208c166_o.jpg" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 0px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 602px;" /></a>And my parents' wedding? When I was growing up, I had a core group of about 5 friends. Sure, I had other acquaintances, but I found that I could never really quite connect with them. But those 5 close friends? By the time I was in high school, they had become like family. They cheered me up and induced giggle fits as I was recovering from surgery. I saw <a href="http://www.intimemovie.com/">In Time</a> over the weekend, and it was one of those films that had you mesmerized the whole time. And in a roundabout way, it raises that very question. In the future, the world no longer revolves around money, but time. Time has replaced money as the ultimate currency, leaving people desperately craving more of it. More seconds. More minutes. More hours. More days. Anything they could get their hands on. <br /><br />Now, if you had asked me this question before the movie, I would have said, hands-down, I want to be a billionaire. But when I think about it today, time seems so much more precious - yes, even more precious than gold. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, and I can look back and say, "I wish I had more time for..."<br /><iframe width="400" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fdadZ_KrZVw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br />So, which would you rather have? Now, friends, it seemed like an easy enough question to me. In fact, the answer seemed obvious. I was pretty sure I had an idea of what people were going to say. But then I started reading the 96 comments to that very question. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. That word was beginning to make me nauseous, giving me that feeling I get in the pit of my stomach when I've eaten too many pieces of Halloween candy corn. It's not pleasant, trust me, friends. Why? Because I've never cared much for those sorts of extremes, those ideas that you can be one or the other, but never, under any circumstances, both. So often, we're taught that if you're gorgeous, you can't possibly have brains, and if you have brains, then you must not have inherited the beauty gene. And a comment advocating gorgeousness above all else? Well, let's just say it knocked my socks off, especially when you read it without correcting the spelling or punctuation: "<em>stunningly gorgeous and average smart (or a bit above average) Studies have shown that the better looking you are the more advanteges you have however there's a threshold-cross that and people feel uncomfortable around you</em>."<br /><br />That, my friends, just proves my point. Being gorgeous is <em>definitely</em> not as sexy as being smart. <br /><br /><strong>What about you? Would you rather be gorgeous or smart? Both?
